Eric Ohena Lembembe was a Cameroonian journalist and LGBTQ+ rights activist who worked tirelessly to document and combat homophobia in his country. In 2013, he was found dead in his home, with signs of torture. His murder remains unsolved. Lembembe’s work continues to inspire LGBTQ+ activists in Cameroon and beyond.
David Kato was a Ugandan teacher and LGBTQ+ rights activist who fought against the country’s harsh anti-homosexuality laws. He was one of the founders of Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG), an organization advocating for LGBTQ+ rights. In 2011, Kato was brutally murdered after being outed by a local newspaper. His death brought international attention to the plight of LGBTQ+ individuals in Uganda. Kato’s activism continues to inspire LGBTQ+ movements across Africa.
Binyavanga Wainaina was a celebrated Kenyan author and LGBTQ+ advocate. In 2014, he publicly came out as gay in a piece titled “I Am a Homosexual, Mum,” which was widely shared and discussed across Africa. His openness challenged stereotypes and sparked conversations about LGBTQ+ rights in Kenya.
Wainaina’s work continues to inspire LGBTQ+ writers and activists in Africa.
